Homelessness is a growing crisis across the United States, and it’s closer to home than many people realize. Here in New Jersey, and even within Sussex County, individuals and families are facing housing instability, financial hardship, and the very real possibility of losing a place to call home. While our community is often seen as rural and resilient, the need for support is present and urgent. This page is dedicated to shedding light on the realities of homelessness in our region, breaking down misconceptions, and highlighting how, together, we can be part of the solution.

New Jersey : 

  • 35% increase in 2-bedroom Fair Market Rent for New Jersey between 2020 and 2025.
  • 70% increase in homelessness over the last five years (2021-2025), per the 2025 Point-In-Time (PIT) count.
  • 39% of NJ households cannot afford the basics and struggle to make ends meet despite being employed (includes those under the poverty level) per the 2025 United Way ALICE report for New Jersey.

Sussex County:

  • Homelessness increased 21% between 2024 and 2025, and 178% in the last five years (2021-2025), per the 2025 PIT Count.
  • The percentage of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, who are living in their cars, tents, makeshift shelters, etc., has increased by 133% since 2023.
